Yall, I have become obsessed.

obsessed with making snacks for and feeding snacks to my chickens.

BUT THEY ARE JUST SO CUTE when you feed them I cant help myself!

One of our FAVORITE chicken snacks is super easy and involves whatever you have laying around the house (this is more of a summer snack…) !

We got out all the fruits and veggies we had in the fridge that I was willing to donate to the chickens and we ended up with:

1 cucumber

a head of lettuce

a small tomato

a handful of strawberries

grapes

blueberries

instant oats

We got some fresh lavender and basil from the garden and threw those in as well for their medicinal properties.

Lavender is a natural stress reliever for chickens, and also aids with blood circulation for laying hens.

Basil has antibacterial properties to help boost the chicks immune system, and It’s also an anti-inflammatory, and so helps keep a healthy gastrointestinal tract providing relief from indigestion and stomach cramps

We cut the fruit and veggies into bite size pieces and threw them into a BIG bowl.

Then we added water, and the oats.

Oats (instant or otherwise) help your chickens deal with the heat, and are an excellent source of vitamins, protein and more! (plus the chickens LOVE them)

We then put the whole thing in the freezer and sat to wait. and wait. and wait.

trust me, when you have an anxious 9yo you FEEL the wait.

when it finally froze we took it outside and gave it to the girls and they LOVED it. as it melted they were able to get to more treats inside the block of ice, and the ice served to keep them cool on a SUPER hot NC day!

Some of our other favorite treats to feed to the chickens include:

Cooked spaghetti (with NO butter, salt etc). The chickens seem to think they are WORMS and go CRAZY chasing each other etc.

Grapes (watching them chase the grapes as they roll around is hilarious!)

Frozen yogurt treats (Oats, blueberries and regular yogurt frozen in muffin tins and tossed out during hot days)

Canned Corn
